Rio de Janeiro's Carnival celebration is undoubtedly the most ostentatious, explosive and breathtaking spectacle on the planet, bringing millions of Brazilians and visitors together in the lush surroundings of the Marvelous City in rapturous joy during the 5 days preceding the pious Catholic season of Lent. The festival takes place every February or March, ending 40 days before Easter and commemorating the end of the long, hot Brazilian summer with a sumptuous, world-famous carnival parade in the Sambadrome. Popular roving street parties called blocos and chic, glittering costume balls called bailes are also part of the program. Non-carnival trade and industry in Rio have completely shut down for the fun, so there's no escaping the intense debauchery.
