About the event

The Cascamorras festival is not well known outside the province of Granada. Despite this, over 20,000 people attend the event every year. What do they do? They run through the streets of Baza covered in black oil and through the town of Guadix throwing colored dough!

Legend has it that the festival arose out of a battle between the two towns over the coveted statue of the Virgin Mary. Baza, the home of the statue, challenged Guadix to try and get to the church without being painted by one of the townspeople to win the statue. Today, the Cascamorras are trying to steal the statue. In addition, the locals try to wrap everything in black oil paint.

Every year, this unique festival takes place on September 6 in Baza and September 9 in Guadix.
